talking about the stalemate for weeks now about the fiscal cliff in washington d.c. how many affect does that really have on consumers during the holiday season? >> i'm surprised it hasn't had more of an affect. we're really only starting to see it seep into consumer thinking, i think, in the last few days, and to hear that washington has basically left town. it looks very dire for some kind of big deal, and, yet, holiday spending seems to be holding up so far. i mean, anecdotally is t seems to be holding up anyway. we won't know for sure until after the holidays. they seem to be saying, yeah, we know there's some problem in washington, but it's almost as if they're tuning it out and saying we're just going to get along with our holiday. >> as we wait to find the final analysis of what this holiday season really meant, we can talk about the marketses and what we're witnessing there because they were down on friday tumbling about 1% after the republican plan b failed to really get any liftoff and get off the ground. as you say, washington basically shutting down for the holiday. are

the fiscal cliff. there have been a few conversations going on at the staff level but really the expectation is that the hard work is going to get done when lawmakers return to washington after the christmas holiday, a little bit later on this week. that's when they're going to resume negotiations in earnest. of course there had been hopes that the president and house speaker john boehner were going to get a deal done. if you looked at the beginning of last week, they were getting close to a deal it appeared but that fell apart and talks fell apart. president obama said i will accept a smaller deal as long as it doesn't allow rates for those to go up for those making $250,000 or less. over the weekend you had a few senators, including senator joe lieberman saying they believe now more than ever we may be getting closer to actually going over the fiscal cliff. that is of course hanging over the heads of a lot of americans as they enter this holiday season and also looming over this vacation the president is having. i'll give you a little sense of what president obama has been up to in hawaii. on saturday he played a round of golf with some of his closest friends and advisers

lawmakers debated over how to avert the fiscal cliff. mother nature took a toll on several parts of the country this year. superstorm sandy ripped through the northeast in late october, leaving a trail of damage along the way. the storm racked up damage of around $60 billion, making it the second most expensive storm ever for the u.s., following hurricane katrina. the storm destroyed houses and businesses on the east coast, leaving millions without power. just months earlier, crop prices shot up following a massive drought that hit the midwest and some northern states. weeks without rain sent corn and soybean prices sky-high. it was estimated that the drought was the worst in nearly a quarter of a century. 2012 was not without its controvesies. trading scandals rocked the news, highlighted by jpmorgan chase. the big bank lost more than $2 billion in what was called "a trading debacle." ceo jamie dimon took a trip to capitol hill for a testimony where he told senators that the industry needs "strong regulation, not always more." meanwhile, at chick-fil-a, the ceo of the popular chain

fiscal cliff and there's no agreement in sight on that. so the idea that congress could suddenly put forward a lot of extra money for something new is not very real in washington. obviously, guns will be on the agenda next year. the president will be pushing for something very different than what wayne lapierre recommended but the national rifle association very powerful and they will have supporters for it as well. >> it seems that everything fell apart right before law makers left for christmas break. boehner's plan b didn't go over so well. >> it didn't go anywhere. and it was interesting because it looked like in the days before that that there had been some movement. president obama had changed his offer and they're really not that far apart on the actual numbers. speaker boehner could not get it through the house. he had to pull the bill. they seemed further apart. if he can't get it for the millionaire's tax, it will be very, very hard to see how we can get president obama to cut taxes for the $50,000 and below. -- $25078,000 level and below. -- $250,000 level. it does raise questions on his own position as house speaker. so many questions in the days ahead. it du

. it is called the fiscal cliff. for that reason. a plan to stop it all from happening still eludes washington. so congress has broken camp for the holidays, the president has gone to hawaii on vacation. white house correspondent brianna keilar tells us no one is really talking, anyone, to get this solved. at least not here at christmas. >> reporter: senate democrats are not in conversations right now with senate republicans or with house republicans. and this is problematic obviously because in order to avoid the fiscal cliff, you would need to find some sort of deal that would make it through the senate and the house and that would mean democratic and republican support. right now, all eyes on the senate because they will reconvene on the 27th that is thursday. and senate majority leader harry reid, it is up to him really to cobble together something that can get some of that support. right now the white house is still supporting a threshold of $250,000 back to their initial starting point for tax rates going up for those making more than that. but you can imagine, hala, that will be very hard f
